The truth about being great
"Jack of all trades, master of none"
everybody knows someone who is seemingly good at everything. This person may be academic, have amazing fitness, is musically talented, and own 2 properties. Sometimes theses rare genetic specimens exist, the people who can just do it all, and do it all very well. These people are usually very inspiring and make everyone around them believe that “hey, maybe I could do all these things to !”
However
the other 99% of us sadly just aren’t that great. For most people getting good at anything requires a whole lot of hard work, time, dedication, etc. However becoming GREAT at something requires something even more. it requires hard work, time and dedication yes, but beyond that it requires a very high level of sacrifice. Sacrificing time spent with friends, time spent with loved ones, time spent relaxing. Your Jack of all trades friend may be good at everything, but being great requires more then ol Jack usually is able to give.
A slightly rude reality check
You cant be great at everything, you just cant. Being great at anything requires so much time and sacrifice that it usually only allows someone the space to be great at a few things.
Take being a great athlete for example. To be a high level athlete requires said athlete to train multiple times a week, usually for a few hours at a time. It requires a very consistent sleep and wake cycle to maximise recovery. It requires a high quality diet, so that the athlete can be fuelled, allowing them to be ready to train and perform. It requires a sober lifestyle usually, to keep the athlete fresh, clear headed and in some cases able to pass drug tests.
These requirements come with a level of sacrifice.
Sacrificing time spent with loved ones and friends, saying no to late nights, staying home instead of eating out with the boys at the pub. Sacrificing income, training equipment costs money, gym membership add up, travel, either local or interstate and beyond isn’t cheap either. etc
This is just the reality of pursuing greatness in an athletic venture. But this ideology applies to anything.
Want to save for a GREAT home, this requires a GREAT home-loan. Saving money requires sacrificing nights out, cutting back on additional spending and potentially having friendships suffer cause you can’t afford to go out all the time. etc etc
People might call you boring, others may call you crazy or obsessed. but the truth is to be great at anything requires a certain level of crazy, the question to ask yourself is are you crazy enough about whatever your pursuing to go all in.
